A colleague invited me out for coffee at a local cukiernia. She asked me what this word was in English. I said "bakery, I guess", but she said bakeries are more like piekarnia - bread shops. Since this was specially a Cake Shop, I guess the English word is "cake shop". : )
The Polish people really love their cake! The grocery store and cukiernias all have many choices of multilayered cakes with various whipped fillings. (See David's birthday cake) Each of the invitations that we've had to friends' houses have also involved copious amounts of cake, tea, and coffee. Although I like cake, I'm looking forward to some fruit pies when I return home.
