Wawel Cathedral

We made our way back to the Wawel this morning to see the cathedral (ran out of time yesterday), and the "Dragon's Den" (a set of caves under the castle with legends about a dragon that used to live there).

View of the Vistula river from the Wawel hill.

This is the exterior of the cathedral (no pictures in the interior).  The inside was quite crowded, but also very pretty.     In many old churches, the main nave is nicely kept, but the side chapels are a bit run down.  That was not the case here.  The side chapels were quite attractive, with well lit-vibrantly painted icons and other paintings, beautiful marble and carved alters.

Wawel Dragon - he flames from the mouth at random intervals! (trying to burn up the beer cans that have been shoved in his craw...)

I was fascinated by the dragon (gargoyle-like) downspouts all over the Wawel complex.

Delaney wanted to tip the local musician, so he let us take a picture with him.

  1. This dragon-like ending of downspout is called "rzygacz" or "pluwacz".
