WWII history - Westerplatte

"On 1 September 1939, the German armoured ship Schleswig Hostein fired on a Polish military post in Westerplatte.  The Polish forces defended for 7 days against numerous attacks coming from the base of the peninsula.  Bombarded from the air and by the heavy guns and mortars, the Polish soliders finally surrendered on 7 September.  Fifteen were killed in battle.  The rest became prisoners of war until the end of the war in 1945" - from local brochure.

We enjoyed a boat ride down the river toward the ocean and the Westerplatte peninsula.  We saw the fortress, the old barracks, and the large memorial on the point commemorating those who died in the first battle of WWII.

 No more war
