"Building your own house"

In the US when you "build your own house" it usually means you hire a contractor who hires sub- contractors, and you make all the spec decisions like which fixtures, appliances, paint colors, and carpet you want.   Our friends have noted that many Poles take a more active role in building their own houses, doing some finishing work themselves, but also doing the contracting of each of the specialty workers.  This saves money and also guarantees that you know more about the quality of work that is going into your house.  We haven't noted a particularly obvious "Polish" style of architecture, but nearly all houses are constructed of cinderblocks - very sturdy!

  1. I hope you didn't believe all that. Those are fairy tales people like to fool themselves with. The reason they all do it like that is they can't afford contractors. Everybody would be more than happy to delegate all this buildings affairs to somebody else. If they only could.

Alas, the government spoils the market. Once, giving contractors better paying and much less stress-laden jobs all over the country. Secondly, keeping a tight girdle of regulations in the building trades which undermines the number of suppliers and rises costs through the roof.

Poland still has one leg firmly stuck in communism - at least mentally. Don't be fooled. It's outrageous, but that's how it really is.
