I enjoyed a very nice reception / Easter celebration with the UMCS International Relations faculty a few nights ago. We were treated to Zur soup (a Polish favorite and Easter tradition), roast beef, deviled eggs, and some kind of mayo-based salad with kernel corn and other goodies. All quite tasty.
Although I was introduced to the faculty in January at a department meeting, I did not get a chance to visit with anyone at the time and did not remember many of the people who were introduced. The reception provided the opportunity to chat with a number of colleagues and learn a bit more about the program, their research, and some random things about Polish history. One faculty spoke about her memories growing up under the Soviets and talked about how children deliberately tried to get poor grades in their Russian language classes. If anyone got better than a C in their Russian class, their friends made fun them. She said her friend who was trying to get into medical school actually apologized to her for making an A because she needed full marks to be admitted...
